My Visit To Harper Collins

I was recently in Toronto for a design conference and I decided that I would reach out to Harper Collins to see if I could come to visit. I was so happy when their blogger relations representative got back to me and invited me for a tour.

I arrived at the office and was given a pass to go up to the 41st floor. The HC headquarters was amazing and haad the most beautiful view of the city. I could definitely picture myself enjoying working up there. Each person had their own little personal libraries at their desks which was fantastic as it showed off everyone what they were interested in as readers.

They showcase the books that are brand new out front in the lobby under glass tables and then have an entire wall with all their other books around the corner. It was a really fun time asking Marisol about how an author gets their books picked up by a publishing company and how books are chosen by the publishing company when they come in.

Marisol was amazing and even provided me with some ARCs to take home which was so cool. I honestly can’t wait to go to their next HC Frenzy event so that I can meet more Canadian bloggers and talk about books!

It was honestly a book blogger’s dream come true to visit this place where all the magic happens and I am so happy to be a part of Harper Collins blogging program!

April Wrap-up

Hey bookworms! I just got back from a dodgeball tournament and I am pooped. My team did very well and we had a lot of fun playing dodgeball against people from all over. Anyways, I am writing this post to update you on everything that I read during the month of April! BTW, I successfully completed the harry potter magical readathon and passed my OWL’s.

via GIPHY

So I am pretty excited about that! Alright now to tell you about the books I read in April. I have reviewed all of them so I will post the links to each one in case you want a more in-depth idea of what I thought about that specific book. This is my first kid of wrap up post so what I will do is show each book and then put their synopsis with the link to my review below that.

The Warrior Heir

20190403_223207_hdr219391911.jpg

Before he knew about the Roses, 16-year-old Jack lived an unremarkable life in the small Ohio town of Trinity. Only the medicine he has to take daily and the thick scar above his heart set him apart from the other high schoolers. Then one day Jack skips his medicine. Suddenly, he is stronger, fiercer, and more confident than ever before. And it feels great – until he loses control of his own strength and nearly kills another player during soccer team tryouts.

Soon, Jack learns the startling truth about himself: he is Weirlind, part of an underground society of magical people who live among us. At their helm sits the feuding houses of the Red Rose and the White Rose, whose power is determined by playing The Game – a magical tournament in which each house sponsors a warrior to fight to the death. The winning house rules the Weir.

As if his bizarre heritage isn’t enough, Jack finds out that he’s not just another member of Weirlind – he’s one of the last of the warriors – at a time when both houses are scouting for a player.

Roses in December: Haunting and Macabre Tales

The book Roses in December lying on a blanket

Roses in December is a short story collection which defies categorisation. Some of the stories are haunting – others are deeply troubling.

A man receives a religious vision in his ordinary back garden; a nuclear physicist in Australia experiences a great surprise where he least expects it; a duct-tape salesman unsettles his faithful customer; Voltaire does not put his best foot forward; someone makes a grim discovery upon waking up in a prison; a psychiatrist does his best to treat a political extremist; a nineteenth-century photographer goes about his usual (and highly unusual) business; and a wealthy neighbourhood in Montreal becomes the scene of an immense and avoidable tragedy.

A big-hearted romantic comedy in which First Son Alex falls in love with Prince Henry of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends…

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

Gold Gods

Readathon + Giveaway Winner

T-minus 1 week until I am off to Ireland. I am getting very excited and am looking forward to the two weeks off work. I have also been watching a lot of booktube since I started a channel and have been getting into that niche and I heard of this thing called the Harry Potter Readathon.

Essentially, we are training for our OWL’s and have different classes we must take in order to get the magical career or our choice. Naturally, I want to be an Auror so I will be taking 5 different OWL’s to achieve this. In order to take these OWL’s, we need to read a different book that falls under each category for the classes. For example, Herbology is to read a book with a plant on the cover.

I will be releasing a new youtube video highlighting my selections and talking about the readathon more in-depth and what each class requires a.k.a what type of book I need to read for each.

As for the comic book giveaway, I had a tremendous amount of entries and am very thankful for everyone that participated. Congratulations to @mclaughlin_alix !!

There is a new book on the block that I am promoting. This one is called Justice Gone by Nick Lombardi. Justice Gone is the first in a series of psychological thrillers involving Dr Tessa Thorpe, wrapped in the divisive issues of modern American society including police brutality and disenfranchised returning war veterans. Christmas Season

It has been a flurry over here at Breakeven Books. We are getting prepared for the holiday season and are busy buying Christmas gifts, baking goodies and finishing up all the projects of the year.

And the best part about the holidays?! More time to read 🙂 I already have a list of 3 books I want to try and finish over the holidays. But I will still be saving time to do the regular Christmas traditions with the family such as driving around looking at Christmas lights with a thermos of cider, listening to Christmas music, and watching Christmas movies (especially It’s A Wonderful Life on December 24th).

via GIPHY

I also get a week off of my full-time job so that is nice. Nothing like a little R&R over the holidays.

Does your family have any holiday traditions that you partake in each year? What are they? Tell me in the comments below 🙂

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays bookworms.

RIP Stan Lee

I know this post is a little late but I just wanted to express my sadness for the loss of Stan Lee. This man was a legend and an inspiration to all. He created most of the comics that I loved and adored as I grew up (still love them to this day). He is the reason I got into drawing and art in general. I have one of his drawing guidebooks that I used to practice with as a kid. You could say that it is because of him that I went to school for Graphic Design and am working in the design field.

His memory will live on in all of his beautiful creations and the stories to come in the Marvel universe. We owe it to him to continue to read comicbooks and to believe in ourselves because we can do anything we put our mind to.

PS. In honor of Stan, use the link below to get 15% off your purchase at Indigo Chapters.
