This is a tough one because there are not a lot of books that I love and hate but if I had to choose one then I would say that the book that I love and hate at the same time would be Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver.
Synopsis: For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12—”Cupid Day”—should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it is…until she dies in a terrible accident that night.
However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined.
I love this book for the fact that it plays with time in a loop and the main character keeps repeating the same day over and over again until she can figure out how to fix it. Pretty much anything involving time-travel or time looping with cause and effect scenarios will have me hooked. I hate it because of how long it takes her to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it (and the fact that it came to this whole looping of time for her to realize how brutal she was to people and what she didn’t notice before). The ending was acceptable though so I do come back to liking it there.

I have two series that I love/hate: Game of Thrones by George Martin because he never finished it. And The Kingkiller Series by Patrick Rothfuss because he never finished it. I was left hanging in both series and that drives me crazy!!
Oh man that would be awful! How could you do that to your readers?! You have to finish a series, that is torture to a bookworm.

I just read book 1. Loved it. Refused to read book 2 till book 3 came out. Looks like it’s going to be a long wait still. When (if) it does come out I’ll get it, then start at book 1.
I heard that Martin does plan to finish it eventually. I read all the books before the TV serial started, which doesn’t follow the books, so now I’d be all confused if I returned to the books again.
Great reads though… That’s why it’s my love/hate. 😀
I love and hate couple of Stephen King novels because they are the best written books ever yet they are so lengthy to read. Sometimes it just makes me feel so sorry trying to read one.

I just finished Kevin Hearne’s new book A Plague of Giants (I’ll be posting a review in the next hour), and I hated the first half, but everything came together for me in the second.
Those are the best, when everything sorts itself out and ends up being enjoyable in the end.

I had mixed feelings about City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. I loved it because I love the world she created, the idea of Shadowhunters and Downworlders. I also love her characters (Jace, Izzy, Alec, Clary, and Simon especially). But the plot of the book itself was kind of painful. I felt like the author was grasping at straws, using every random detail she’d mentioned in previous books to create a new villain with a half-baked plan to inflict pain upon these characters, who already suffered enough in my humble opinion. I haven’t read the books that come after City of Fallen Angels because of this, although, I probably will someday just out of respect for the author.
I have never read those books but a lot of people talk about them and from what I have heard, there I a lot of mixed feelings on these books! I get what you mean though, I loved the Mazerunner series by James Dashner but didn’t really like the Eye of the Minds series by him (I just read them out of respect to the authors writing style).
Tough challenge, but after reading through the comments (thanks, fellow commenters!) I came up with some.
Game of Thrones. Loved the first 4 books, but it got to the point that nothing was happening. The dangerous threat in the north is still a distant threat, the little kid with all his potential is still not doing anything, characters come and go but the plot doesn’t go anywhere. I didn’t even read book 5, and I haven’t watched the HBO series because of my disgust with the book. Loved Stephen King’s The Stand.
Didn’t like his extended version of The Stand.
To me any book or film in which they later add extended scenes/footage is like advertising “See all the stuff that wasn’t good enough to be in the first book/film. The extended version of The Stand wasn’t nearly as good (it was almost a bit like Game of Thrones in that it had pointless plot arcs that he tried to justify with a sentence or two later on but which felt cobbled together).
Watch the Game of Thrones TV serial when it’s done! You’ll love it, even if you’re fed up with the books.
And The Stand. Oh, I loved that too. After reading your comment I’m glad I didn’t bother with the extended version.
Fantastic Post Eric!😁 I would have to say the Fifty Shades of Grey series. I loved the concept of the series but it was a mess at the same time. I’m all about some BDSM love but the way they portrayed it turned me off.
