Book Review: Sunrise on the Reaping

This book delivers exactly what longtime Hunger Games fans have been waiting for—a raw, unflinching look into Haymitch Abernathy’s past and the brutal truth behind his victory. Getting to know Haymitch beyond the gruff, alcohol-soaked mentor we met in the original trilogy added so much depth to his character. His story is heartbreaking, enraging, and incredibly human.

This installment pulls no punches. It’s intense, layered, and emotionally devastating at times—not just because of the Games themselves, but because you can see the seeds of rebellion beginning to take root. Watching these characters, especially Haymitch, endure such cruelty and impossible choices makes the eventual uprising feel even more justified and necessary. My heart shattered over and over again.

One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing familiar faces from the original series in their earlier days. It was like a haunting glimpse into how much they’ve all changed—and how much they’ve lost. And let’s talk about President Snow. If you thought you hated him before, just wait. This book cements him as one of the most despicable villains in my mind.

After this deep dive into Haymitch’s past, I’m officially begging for a Finnick or Johanna book next. There’s so much story left to explore, and Sunrise on the Reaping proves just how rich this world still is.

Emotionally gripping and politically charged, this prequel stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of the series. An absolute must-read for fans of Panem.
