Every now and then, a debut novel comes along that introduces a fresh take on storytelling, weaving together elements of character growth, intricate worldbuilding, and unique magic systems. A Journey Thrice Begun by Sean Bobby Kerr is one such book. With a strong protagonist, a fascinating chess-based magic system (not chess exactly but a game very much like it), and an ending that delivers a satisfying payoff, this book has plenty to offer—despite some pacing issues that slowed the journey along the way.
Character Development and a Rewarding Conclusion
One of the book’s strongest aspects is its character development. The protagonist’s journey is both engaging and believable, making their growth feel natural and well-earned. As the story unfolds, we see them face challenges that shape them into a more well-rounded and resilient individual. By the time the book reaches its conclusion, every step of their evolution feels justified, making the ending all the more impactful.
A Chess-Inspired Magic System
A particularly intriguing aspect of A Journey Thrice Begun is its magic system, which is built around the mechanics of this chess like game. This unique approach adds a strategic and methodical layer to the story, making it stand out from other fantasy novels. While the book offers a solid introduction to how this system works, I found myself wanting to dive deeper into its intricacies. A more in-depth exploration of the rules, history, and broader applications of this magic could have added even more richness to the world.
Clever Easter Eggs and Puzzles
Another highlight of the novel is the way it subtly weaves in easter eggs and puzzles throughout the narrative. These elements are revealed naturally, never feeling forced or overly convenient. Instead, they unfold in a way that keeps the reader engaged, offering little moments of discovery that add to the overall experience.
Pacing Issues in the Middle
While there is a lot to love about this book, the middle section does struggle with pacing. About 25% of the story is spent in one location, which slows the momentum and makes parts of the book feel repetitive. A tighter narrative structure, with a bit more forward movement, could have helped maintain engagement without losing the depth that makes the book compelling.
Final Thoughts
Despite the pacing issues, A Journey Thrice Begun remains a promising debut with strong worldbuilding, a unique magic system, and a protagonist worth rooting for. The ending delivers a satisfying conclusion, making the journey feel worthwhile even if it takes a little longer to get there. If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with a strategic twist, this book is definitely worth picking up.
This is an author to watch, and I look forward to seeing what Sean creates next!
