Book Review: What If It’s Us

I read this book awhile back (as most of my reviews start because I am so behind) for a book club and here I am to finally tell you about it. This one was called What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera.

Synopsis: Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.

Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.

But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?

I’ll start by saying I like both of these authors and think that they are very talented. They have a way of bringing out emotion in you for their characters and reading their books makes your heart feel warm. That being said, I didn’t quite feel that with this book. I still flew through it as it was an easy book to read but I wasn’t really liking the characters in this one as much as their other books.

Arthur was a little bit over the top for me and I found him to be annoying at times. Also, very dramatic (which can be fun sometimes but in this case it seemed over done).

There is lots of the miscommunication trope in this book which is my least favorite trope and I felt like Arthur acted very childish at times when he could have just talked out an issue instead of stomping off and thinking the world was over for him. Half the time, he didn’t even understand the situation but made a big deal out of it.

Ben was definitely the more responsible character but I wasn’t really captured with him either. I honestly wanted to know more about the side characters in this book than the main ones.

I will say that the ending was very realistic so I liked that because the rest of the book wasn’t. But overall, I did go through it very quick and it was nice to take a break from the denser books I read to take on this one.

Book Rating: 3/5
